Oak Island, NC

In the farthermost corner of North Carolina is a small island.  Oak Island used to consists of three small towns; Long Beach, Yaupon Beach and Caswell Beach.  In 1999, two of those three towns consolidated to become the Town of Oak Island.

I am kinda partial to this particular beach in that I've lived here most of my adult life.  I moved here in the early 80's.  So much has changed since then.  Most of the roads were dirt.  We had no Walmart or Food Lion.  The small town feel would give me many wonderful memories to carry me through in my 'older' years.

Oak Island was dubbed "North Carolina's Best Kept Secret" for many many years.  With the large real estate and housing boom in 2005 and 2006, I'm here to tell you......   THE SECRET IS OUT!!!!!!!

Our most recent 'claim to fame' has been the filming of the much advertised Safe Haven movie starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. Based on a book by the same name written by Nicholas Sparks, most of the movie was filmed in nearby Southport but there were many scenes filmed at Oak Island on the beach.

Oak Island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other.  Population has grown so much in the last few years that the Town is having trouble keeping up with demand. We sport many great restaurants, ice cream shops, gift stores and nature's own beauty.  Oak Island has been named Tree City for many years.  We don't have the tall buildings and concrete structures that many of the more commercial beaches have.

One of my favorite places to go is Turtle Island Restaurant.  The food is always excellent, the staff friendly and you always come away with a happy face and a full belly.

If you ever get a chance to visit beautiful Oak Island, please do so.  And if you ever get a chance to see the movie Safe Haven, you will certainly understand the attraction.  But shhhhhhhh.......  some of us locals would still like to keep it a secret........
